26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” Luke 16:25-26
When God created the world, He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

Cuando Dios creo el universo declaró lo que era bueno y se lo dio a la humanidad para que lo disfrutara. Sin embargo, a lo largo de los años hemos creado un abismo entre los que recibieron grandes dones y los que no. En el Evangelio de hoy vemos que con nuestra propia generosidad debemos cerrar la brecha que permita unir a aquellos que tienen mucho con los que tienen poco, o nos podremos encontrar en el lado equivocado del abismo en la próxima vida.
Welcome Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone
We welcome Archbishop Cordileone, who is joining us to celebrate the feast of St. Finn Barr Weekend with great joy and excitement.
The Archbishop will arrive at our parish tomorrow, Friday, September 23, 2022, at 8:45 am. From 9 am- 10:15 am, the Archbishop will visit some sick parishioners and bring them the Eucharist. Later that morning, he will spend time visiting our school students before ending the day with lunch at noon with the staff and faculty of the school.
The Archbishop will be back on Sunday to lead us in the Patronal Feast Mass at 10:00 am, followed by Buffet brunch in the Goode Hall.
Show St. Finn Barr love and great hospitality to our beloved Archbishop!

Pope Francis calls all of us to feel deeply about our stewardship to care for the earth and the poor. As people of faith, we honor our Creator as we care for creation.
In promotion of the efforts to care for the Earth, we join the annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home "The Season of Creation," from Sept. 1 – the World Day of Prayer for Creation – to Oct. 4 – the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
The theme for this year's Season of Creation is "Listen to the Voice of Creation." The intention is to raise awareness of the need to listen to the voice of all creation…the voices of those who suffer the impacts of climate change, the voices of those who hold generational wisdom about how to live gratefully within the limits of the land and the voices of a diminishing diversity of more-than-human species.

To mark "The Season of Creation," I will share weekly reflections on the care of the earth.
CLIMATE CHANGE IS ACCELERATING FASTER THAN IT SHOULD
Verifiable evidence by scientists has shown that our climate is changing at an accelerated rate. And current empirical evidence supports this claim. Scientists agree that some level of warming is normal and should be expected. However, the rate at which the climate has been warming, particularly in the last 50 years, is alarming. Scientists have also established evidence that rapid climate change results from increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Therefore, individual and collective efforts are needed to check the speed of climate change to avoid the worsening consequences of overheating the earth.
Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudato Si, affirms the scientific findings. “A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climate system. In recent decades this warming has been accompanied by a rise in sea level and, it would appear, by an increase of extreme weather events, even if a scientifically determined cause cannot be assigned to each particular phenomenon” (LS NO 23). Francis holds that change is part of our complex system but that the speed of human activity today contrasts with the ordinary course of biological evolution. These changes, he says, are sometimes not geared towards the common good (LS NO 18).
The climate changes we are experiencing daily may vary from region to region, but the signs of climate crises are everywhere. Summer heatwaves are becoming longer and more severe, Winters are getting warmer, fire outbreaks are becoming more regular and dangerous, and trees and flowers bloom earlier in Spring. Glaciers are melting, and rising sea levels are experienced in some places. There are also floods and desertification. Bird migration patterns are changing, and tropical diseases are becoming more common.
Despite the mounting evidence of climate change, many people deny its reality for political, economic, and cultural reasons. This climate denial is sometimes active and other times passive. Climate denial is a problem that adds to the pain of climate change and holds us back from all embarking on actions that will save our climate.
While maintaining that climate is a common good, Pope Francis has appealed to us in Laudato Si to change our lifestyles, production, and consumption to combat climate warming. He notes that the climate crisis is exasperated by our development model based on the aggressive use of fossil fuels and the service of soil, mainly deforestation, for agricultural purposes (LS NO 23). Furthermore, collective actions through advocacy and political pressure will bring about climate-friendly government policies and activities.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The readings remind us to be patient. In the first reading the prophet is calling on the Lord and nothing seems to happen. The psalm sings of hearing God’s voice. In the second reading Paul reminds us that the Spirit will give us self-control. In the gospel Jesus tells us that God does not answer to us, but we must trust that He is working in our lives.
1. Do I tell God what I want and expect it immediately?
2. How can I learn to trust that God loves me? Do I glorify God with my actions or do I seek recognition for myself?

Jesus tells the parable of the reversal of fortunes between the rich man and the poor man, Lazarus.
Background on the Gospel Reading
A major theme in the Gospel of Luke is the importance of the care of the poor in the life of discipleship. In the parable found in today's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the life of a rich man and the poor man, Lazarus, who lives in the shadow of the rich man and his wealth. Both die. Lazarus finds himself in heaven; the rich man in the netherworld. The rich man asks for assistance from Lazarus in his torment. But Abraham reminds the rich man of the good things he had in his life and describes the current situation as a reversal of fortunes.
The rich man then asks that Lazarus be sent to warn his family, but this is denied with the reminder that Moses and the prophets have warned of judgment for those who neglect the care of the poor. In the context of Luke's Gospel, this parable, delivered in the presence of a crowd of listeners, is part of Jesus' response to some Pharisees. These Pharisees are described in Luke's Gospel as “loving money.”
(Note: The Pharisees were followers of a sect of Judaism active before, during, and after Jesus' lifetime. They taught an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses as the basis for popular Jewish piety. They put less emphasis on Temple worship and more on applying the law to everyday life. Though they are often portrayed negatively in the Gospels, they shared many of Jesus' and the early Church's concerns about the law.)
Jesus observed that the actions of some Pharisees betrayed misplaced priorities: they spoke one way, but acted in another. The story of the rich man and Lazarus demonstrates the importance of the care of the poor and is a reminder to those who would follow Jesus of the unimportance of wealth in the eyes of God.
